PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY OF ARMENIA AFRAID OF NATIONAL ASSEMBLY DISSOLUTION
05.12.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. "Setting time limits for the amendments to the Electoral Code to become valid had no serious grounds", leader of "Orinats Yerkir", deputy of the Armenian parliament Arthur Baghdasarian said in the interview to Mediamax.
According to him, "Orinats Yerkir", like the majority of parliamentary factions, spoke against setting time limits. But the "Unity" bloc, which has the majority of seats in the parliament, insisted on it, the deputy said. "So the political forces, represented in the parliament, came to a compromise in order not to vote down the bill", Arthur Baghdasarian said. In his opinion, such position of "Unity" is conditioned by the parliamentary majority's fear for the parliament dissolution by the President of Armenia.
The parliament of Armenia passed at the second reading the amendments bill to the Electoral Code, according to which the ratio of majority and proportional seats in the National Assembly of Armenia will be changed only in 2003. 94 deputies are to be elected by proportional system and 37 - by majority system. -0-
