TURKS HOPE THAT IF REPUBLICANS WIN THE U.S. CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS IT WOULD BE EASIER TO OPPOSE ARMENIAN LOBBY
04.11.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. On the eve of elections in the US, scheduled for November 7 of 2000, an active discussions have started in Turkey. Turks question the victory of which party of the US would be preferable for them for opposing the efforts of the Armenian lobby in the US, aimed at recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
The Turkish NTV company stresses that Ankara sees both Al Gore and George Bush as having warm attitudes toward Turkey. It is noteworthy, that the teams of the both candidates have "pro-Turkish" advisors. Moreover, NTV informs that the candidates for the vice-presidency democrat Joe Lieberman and republican Dick Cheyenne both also seen as friendly to Turkey in light of discussions of the resolution on the Armenian Genocide in the US Congress.
At the same time, a Republican majority in the House is seen by Turkey as more preferable, even regardless the fact that the incumbent Speaker of the House of Representatives Deniss Hastert was an active supporter of adoption of the Armenian Genocide resolution.
"Majority of Democrats' leaders are known as persons having negative attitude towards Turkey. If the Democrats win a majority in the house, then Democrat Sam Gejdenson would be heading the Congressional International Relations committee. This congressman is considered by Turkish officials as "radically anti-Turkish". That would mean more headaches for Ankara, NTV says.
Turks consider that if the Republicans keep their majority in the House, Republican Doug Bereuter, who is thought favorable to Turkey, seems due to take charge of the International Relations Committee. --0--
