FRENCH AND TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTERS DISCUSSED ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
The Armenian Genocide was discussed at a meeting of foreign ministers of Turkey and France Abdullah Gul and Dominique de Villepin in Ankara. As reported by "Mediamax" agency, the Turkish foreign ministry head emphasized that the accusations in genocide should be assessed by historians. At the same time he stated there were "circles willing to cast a shadow on the Turkish-French cooperation" and called to rule out "phenomena, which can hamper the development of bilateral relations." In A. Gul's words, Turkish public is very susceptible towards the issue. In his turn, commenting on the decision to open a monument to the victims of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey in the center of Paris, the French minister said the government of France could not influence decisions of city authorities. Let us remind that already in 2001 French president Jacques Chirac enacted a law recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey in 1915, which had earlier been passed by the French National Assembly and Senate.
