Iranian FM unveils plans to use home-made fuel rods

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said his country plans to use domestically-produced fuel rods for a research reactor in Tehran in just a few months.

“The first consignment of 20-percent enriched fuel for the reactor will be ready in the coming months,” Fars News Agency quoted Salehi as saying on the sidelines of the 18th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa on Sunday, Jan 29.

"After our opposite parties refused to carry out their obligations in providing fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor, we moved towards 20 percent enrichment in line with our rights," he said. "Although the other side did not imagine that we could achieve 20 percent enrichment and transform it into fuel rods, they will see that in the coming months we will place our indigenous fuel rods in the Tehran Research reactor."
