Arab League chief says Russia's stance on Syria “might have changed”

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi on Sunday, February 12 told a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers that a message he received from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shows Russia's stance on Syria “might have changed.”

Al-Arabi, speaking at the start of the meeting in Cairo, quoted Lavrov as having said Russia supports the Arab League's efforts and would be ready “to expand the observer mission” in Syria, M&C reported citing DPA. He also told the gathering that the proposed joint observer mission to Syria by the Arab League and the United Nations being discussed Sunday would include diplomatic efforts.

“Violence cannot be stopped without a vision agreed upon for the desired political settlement” al-Arabi said. “This mission must differ radically”.
