Assad orders release of new Syria constitution

President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree to publish Syria’s constitution, which was “approved by the Syrian people in the referendum” in the official Gazette.

"The constitution is to be considered effective as of February 27," the report said without elaborating, Now Lebanon reported citing SANA.

On Monday, Syria said almost 90 percent of voters approved a new constitution in the referendum.

Syria has witnessed anti-regime protests since mid-March. The United Nations estimated that more than 7,000 people have been killed in the regime’s crackdown on dissent.
