Kurds resolute to blow up Middle East by declaring independence

From time to time there appear on the internet maps of Greater Kurdistan, which includes part of Armenia, as well as the territories of Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

On March 21, Nowruz day, President of the Iraqi Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani is going to announce about the establishment of independent Kurdistan. The time, in fact, is chosen quite inappropriately, considering the situation in the Middle East. If Barzani is indeed ready to declare independence, he should at least be prepared for various kinds of threat, or simply for invasion by Turkey. It is one thing to join efforts with Iraq to destroy the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and another - aggression against an independent state, if such is ever established.

PanARMENIAN.Net - International reaction to Barzani’s statement did not follow. France and Britain are yet undecided on their stance on this issue; the U.S. doesn’t seem ready for independent Kurdistan either; Turkey, as always, suggests discussing the issue. Unreadiness of Washington is unclear because establishment of an independent Kurdistan has long been the U.S. goal, so as to establish control over the oil of Kirkuk. But establishment of this state could turn into another gin that would become either a nightmare or at least a trouble for the West, and for Armenia too.

From time to time there appear on the internet maps of Greater Kurdistan, which includes part of Armenia, as well as the territories of Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The Middle East may soon be faced with the fact of existence of a powerful and rather big state, which is unlikely to be peaceful. Too many weapons, too many problems, instability of the new formation, and even Islam, into the bargain. Kurdistan could become refuge for Islamic fundamentalists banished, for various reasons, from their countries of residence. Besides, it could bring on a new wave of Kurdish invasion into Europe. Even now, according to some reports, Berlin is home to 60,000 Kurds and their number is still growing. The same is true also about the whole of Northern Europe.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari declared that Iraqi Kurds want to play the role of envoys in countries where Kurdish problem needs a solution. It is not clear how these envoys could solve problems and, most importantly, whether Ankara, Tehran and Damascus would agree to the presence of Kurdish diplomats. Kurdistan may be recognized by the UN, or may share the fate of Palestine, which proved unable to override the veto on membership. However, in this case, the countries that wouldn’t be happy about the state of Barzani, have no right of veto, but they can enlist the support of the permanent members of the Security Council if they are able to convince them of the inadvisability of such a move at this stage. However, the situation is very complicated and almost unpredictable.

As we have already noted, Armenia should expect nothing good from this venture. Kurds living in southeastern Turkey were pleased to learn the news of independent Kurdistan. This means that Armenian-Turkish border would become more dangerous than it has been. The Kurds are determined to establish a state with a center in Diyarbakir, and then Armenia will have to hold back not only Turks, but also Kurds. Turkish minorities in provinces of Van, Mush, Diyarbakir will encourage creeping penetration of the Kurds into Armenia. In fact, they may even simulate conditions for successful expansion of Kurds. If you follow the logic of Ankara, the PKK militants could easily settle in the border areas of Armenia, the more so because it’s already over a year that they talk about it in Turkey. And what’s the difference between Armenia and Iraq? Cross-border operations could be conducted here, too. However, there is still time till March 21, and Massoud Barzani may still postpone the declaration of independence.
