New gas tariffs under discussion

For lack of gas resources, Armenia is extremely dependent on Russian Gazprom giant, which will again raise tariffs in 2011, continuing the policy of market pricing with Belarus, Moldova and Armenia.

By decision of the Public Services Regulatory Commission, the gas prices have risen 37.5%, totaling AMD 132 against the previous AMD 96 for ordinary consumers, and 13%, totaling USD 243.13 for 1 thousand cu m for enterprises respectively since April 1, 2010.

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian government had barely taken action to smooth the consequences of the April rise when a new rise struck.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs was allocated AMD 367,582 mln to render assistance to poor families. Besides, AMD 751, 271 was assigned for families with children under 2. In total, AMD 316,225 mln is envisaged for distribution among families for having one more child.

Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan assures that additional measures will be taken to protect the most vulnerable strata of population from the regular rise in prices for gas.

“The Armenian government is negotiating new gas tariff policy. ArmRosgazprom will announce the results of the talks in 2 months. The issue was discussed during Russian President’s visit to Armenia and ArmRosgazprom was instructed to employ international practice in Armenia,” he said.

So, Gazprom raises prices each year while the Armenian government launches talks to lower them, with a little success.

Nevertheless, the number of gas consumers increased by 8518 over 8 months of 2010 in Armenia. Besides, 427314 safety systems have been installed as of September 1, 2010.
