WB: poverty index in Armenia comprises 3%

PanARMENIAN.Net - Poverty index in Armenia grew simultaneously with economic slump, head of World Bank Yerevan Office Aristomene Varoudakis said.

As he told a news conference today, a survey was held among households to register a 3% increase in their number, compared with 2008 results.

"Poverty index could have been twice higher, but for Armenian government's timely policy for protection of financially vulnerable population," Mr. Varoudakis said. "Poverty index could have reached 6%, without poverty allowance system implemented. That's why it is essential for poverty allowance expenditures to be stipulated by state budget."
