Yerevan residents voting in City Council elections

PanARMENIAN.Net - Yerevan City Council elections started in the Armenian capital at 8 am local time, with 816 475 entitled to vote.

6 political parties and 1 bloc are running for City Council: Republican Party of Armenia, Prosperous Armenia, Armenian National Congress, Orinats Yerkir, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Mission and Barev Yerevan bloc.

Prosperous Armenia’s list includes 194 candidates, with ex-foreign minister Vartan Oskanian topping the list.

Armenian National Congress party is represented by 41 candidates, with ex-mayor of Yerevan Vahagn Khachatryan topping the list.

Orinats Yerkir’s list includes 105 candidates, with Emergency Situations Minister Hovhannes Shahinyan topping the list.

Dashnaktsutyun is represented by 65 candidates, with the party’s faction leader Armen Rustamyan topping the list.

Mission’s list numbers 29 candidates, with the member of the party’s political council Mesrop Arakelyan topping the list.

Barev, Yerevan bloc is represented by 64 candidates with Heritage party representative Armen Martirosyan topping the list.

6466 local and international observers will be monitoring the polls.

The government of Armenia had scheduled the Yerevan City Council election for May 5. The resolution was taken at a Thursday, February 14 meeting based on completion of the Council’s term of office.

The law on municipal government stipulates for a 65-member Council elected for a 4-year term. The Council is responsible for electing Yerevan Mayor.
