President, SCR board chair discuss Armenian railway modernization

PanARMENIAN.Net - President Serzh Sargsyan met Vladimir Yakunin, the chairman of the Board of Directors of South Caucasus Railways, President of Russian Railways OJSC, which has assumed the trust management of the Armenian railway.

At the meeting, President Sargsyan stressed Armenia’s interest in strengthening the strategic partnership with Russia, with cooperation in the sector of transport as an important component.

According to the Armenian leader, the ongoing cooperation with the Russian Railways should be seen in this very context. Thanking Yakunin for constructive and fruitful work, the President stressed his personal contribution to the development of transport infrastructures in Armenia.

Yakunin, in turn, briefed the President on the progress of Armenian railway modernization and refurbishment activities. As he further noted, a rolling stock maintenance unit and a locomotive depot had been commissioned in Gyumri to provide new jobs for the local population.

President Sargsyan and Yakunin also discussed current situation with the Armenian railway, the prospects of development, as well as the compliance with the commitments assumed by Russian Railways OJSC under the concession contract.
