Belgium to pay 40,000 euros in compensation to Armenian family

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Belgian state has had to pay 40,000 euros in compensation to the family of an Armenian asylum seeker following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, Expatica Belguim reports.

The Armenian died last year.

The asylum seeker travelled to Belgium for a liver transplant, but failed to obtain a residence permit. The Human Rights Court convicted Belgium last year and insisted that the Armenian should receive medical care. Barely a month later he was dead.

The court's ruling also shows that Belgium paid compensation to his family.

Ivo Flachet of Progress Lawyers Network Brussels: "He did not receive the necessary care despite an order from the European Court. By agreeing a settlement with the family the Belgian Government has accepted that it violated human rights legislation regarding the right to life and humane treatment".
