Netflix breaks into Oscar club with best doc “The Lady in Number 6”March 3, 2014 - 13:35 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Netflix broke into the Oscar club Sunday, March 2 night, winning its first Oscar for the best documentary short subject The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life, The Hollywood Reporter said. The streaming video service's arrival at the Academy Awards follows a similar showing at September's Emmy Awards, where it made history by taking home three Emmys for House of Cards -- including a best directing trophy for David Fincher. Actress Robin Wright also took a Golden Globe award for the series in January. Netflix did not produce The Lady in Number 6, Malcolm Clarke's film about Alice Herz-Somme, but instead picked up distribution rights to the completed film early last week. Somme was the world's oldest known Holocaust survivor at the time of filming, who died in London at the age of 110 on Sunday, Feb. 23. Netflix also had a horse in the feature documentary race, where it holds streaming rights to Jeane Noujaim's The Square, but that film, although a critical favorite, lost in its category to Twenty Feet From Stardom. Netflix picked up streaming rights in November to Noujaim's documentary about the Egyptian Revolution and began offering it to subscribers in mid-January.
