Yahoo launches News Digest app for Android devices

PanARMENIAN.Net - Yahoo has launched its News Digest app for Android devices and made the iOS version of the service available for all users worldwide. The app gives users news round-ups twice a day, and was initially only available to iOS device owners based in the U.S. or the UK, The Next Web reported.

The service was first launched earlier this year and is based on Summly, the startup started by British teenager Nick D’Aloisio which Yahoo acquired last year. The service is available via four different editions: the existing U.S. and UK versions of the app, which are now available on Android, and new editions for Canada and the rest of the world, both of which are available on iOS and Android.

In a post on the Yahoo blog, D’Aloisio says that 40 percent of users who downloaded the app in the U.S. and UK use it every day, and that was the spark for widening its availability. He doesn’t reveal how many downloads it saw in the two countries, however.

Yahoo has tapped into the specifics of Android to develop a homescreen widget for the app that it says displays recent unread content to users. The widget also tracks digests that have been read, and provides a countdown that shows when the next bulletin will be ready, according to TNW.
