Artsakh army soldier killed at contact line in unclear circumstances

PanARMENIAN.Net - Artsakh army soldier Derenik Manukyan, 20 received a fatal gunshot wound in a frontline position of a military unit in the northern direction of the Line of Contact of Nagorno-Karabakh’s and Azerbaijan’s troops, the press service of the NKR Defense Ministry reported.

With circumstances of the attack unclear, an investigation has been launched into the June 11 incident.

The NKR Defense Ministry shares the grief of the loss and extends condolences to Derenik Manukyan’s family, relatives and fellow servicemen.

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
