South by Southwest Fest unveils Midnighters lineup

PanARMENIAN.Net - South by Southwest has unveiled 11 titles for its Midnighters section, including nine world premieres, as well as the complete short film lineup, Variety reports.

The 22nd edition of the festival runs from March 13 to 21 in Austin, Texas. Ondi Timoner’s Russell Brand documentary “Brand: A Second Coming” is the opening-night film.

“Creepy, clever, engrossing, and frightening are just a few words that come to mind when I think about this year’s SXSW Midnighters lineup,” said SXSW’s senior programmer Jarod Neece. “These nine world premieres and two festival favorites are helmed by five first-time filmmakers and several SXSW alumni.”

Highlights include the world premiere of Jason Krawczyk’s “He Never Died,” starring Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins in a story of a man’s eternal struggle with cannibalism.

Other world premieres include “The Corpse of Anna Fritz” (Spain), directed by Hector Hernandez Vicens; “Deathgasm” (New Zealand), directed by Jason Lei Howden; “The Diabolical,” directed by Alistair Legrand; “Excess Flesh,” directed by Patrick Kennelly; “Hangman,” directed by Adam Mason; “The Invitation,” directed by Karyn Kusama and starring Michiel Huisman; “Pod,” directed by Mickey Keating; and “We Are Still Here,” directed by Ted Geoghegan.

The other titles in the lineup are “The Nightmare,” directed by Rodney Ascher, and “Turbo Kid” (Canada/New Zealand), directed by RKSS Collective.

Last year’s Midnighters section included the U.S. premiere of “Oculus,” which went on to gross $40 million worldwide.
