Smith stars in the adaptation based on real events as Miss Shepherd, who spent her later years living out of a yellow van. The film is based on a play by author Alan Bennett, who offered the pensioner temporary residence on his property during the '70s and '80s. Miss Shepherd then ended up staying for 15 years. Alex Jennings plays Bennett in the film, while James Corden, Jim Broadbent and Dominic Cooper also appear. Bennett penned the script and Nicholas Hytner directed the project.
