Apple acquires Star Wars face capture provider

PanARMENIAN.Net - Apple has been busy making acquisitions again, this time snapping up a Swiss company that provided face capture tech for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Digital Spy reports citing TechCrunch.

Zurich-based startup Faceshift specialises in 3D sensors that capture facial expressions in real time, data that can be used to make non-human characters in movies and games look more convincing.

The firm was working on consumer software that allows Skype users to set a real-time avatar for video chats.

Apple has not confirmed why it purchased Faceshift or even acknowledged the deal, responding to requests for comment with a non-committal reply.

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," said an Apple spokesperson.

Several Faceshift employees are now said to be working directly for Apple.
