Armenia's Gomk community gets LED street lighting systemNovember 28, 2015 - 15:23 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and VivaCell-MTS concluded the 10th initiative implemented this year. In the framework of the joint Alternative Energy Project, a street lighting system with 37 LED lights has been installed in Gomk community of Vayots Dzor province. VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian, FPWC founder Ruben Khachatryan, head of Gomk community Mkhitar Hovhannisyan and community residents attended the event. Situated 7 km far from Nakhijevan, the community has a population of almost 300. The outdoor lighting has been one of the main problems in this village since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Now, an area covering 1300 meters - almost 60 % of the village - has been provided with energy-efficient outdoor lighting. Hailing the initiative, Yirikian said the initiative aims to instill hope and optimism towards the future. The environmentally friendly and energy-efficient LED lights will reduce energy costs by up to 80%. Outdoor lighting will be provided from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am in summer, from 6:30 pm to 12:00 am in winter, and all night long on holidays. LED bulbs are efficient and durable, lasting much longer than the regular ones. The FPWC and VivaCell-MTS welcome the use of latest technologies in environment protection initiatives, promoting nature conservation, energy efficiency and community development.
