BGP nabs critically acclaimed comedy “The Apostate”

PanARMENIAN.Net - Philadelphia-based Breaking Glass Pictures (BGP) has acquired all North American distribution rights to “The Apostate”, the critically acclaimed comedy of Uruguayan-Spanish helmer Federico Veiroj (“A Useful Life”), Variety reports.

Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff closed the deal with Sandro Fiorin of FiGaFilms after film’s screening at last month’s Miami Intl. Film Festival.

“FiGa Films brings another unique international voice to the U.S. audience,” said Michael Repsch, Breaking Glass SVP of distribution & sales, who has also picked up Geraldine Chaplin-toplined drama “Sand Dollars” from the Miami-based distributor in the past.

“It’s a privilege to continue our collaboration with Breaking Glass Pictures. They are wonderful partners that will take very good care of ‘The Apostate,’” said Fiorin. BGP’s other Spanish-language pickups include Paraguay thriller “Seven Boxes” and Alex de la Iglesia’s “My Big Night.”

Starting in September, BGP plans a limited theatrical release of the comedy in the U.S. and Canada, leading with New York, Los Angeles and Miami, to be followed by a multiplatform rollout, including SVOD and other streaming services. “The Apostate” stars Alvaro Ogalla, Barbara Lennie, Marta Larralde and Vicky Pena.

A coming-of-age comedy about a university student rebelling against his straitlaced upbringing, “The Apostate” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and has snagged the Fipresci and Special Jury Mention prizes at Spain’s San Sebastian.

FiGa Films has sold “The Apostate” to a host of territories, including France, Mexico, Brazil, Panama, Argentina and Central America.
