"Sully" retains box office throne as "Bridget Jones's Baby" flops

PanARMENIAN.Net - Warner Bros.' biographical drama "Sully" retains the box office throne in its second week. The Clint Eastwood-directed biopic of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, which stars Tom Hanks in the titular role, wins the race again with an estimated $22 million, bringing its total domestic cume to $70.5 million so far, AceShowbiz said.

Opening in the runner-up spot is Lionsgate's "Blair Witch". The Adam Wingard-directed horror flick starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez and Corbin Reid fails to steal the first spot from "Sully", but it manages to earn almost two times of its $5 million budget with an estimated $9.7 million domestically.

Other newcomers including "Bridget Jones's Baby" and "Snowden" open weak in their first week at the domestic box office. The Renee Zellweger-led comedy debuts in the third place with an estimated $8.2 million, while the Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley-starring film opens at No. 4 with approximately $8 million in its first week.

However, the follow-up to "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" earns its success overseas. The romantic comedy opens at No. 1 in twenty four territories, bringing its worldwide gross to $38.1 million. Meanwhile, the true-story movie about Edward Snowden marks the lowest debut in filmmaker Oliver Stone's career.

Rounding out the top five is Sony's "Don't Breathe". The horror flick starring Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto adds another $5.6 million in its fourth week, bringing its total to $75.3 million domestically.
