Armenia supports creation of nuclear-weapons-free zones

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia supports the idea of creating a nuclear-weapons-free zone, said Ara Mkrtchyan, head of foreign ministry's Department for Arms Control and International Security at a scientific conference dedicated to the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.

"A dedicated supporter of the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Armenia attaches great importance to the comprehensive implementation of treaties in this field," Mkrtchyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

In this framework, he said, among the key agreements are the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, to which Armenia joined on the first days of its independence, and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty, which was ratified in 2006.

He noted that Armenia highly appreciates the aspirations of Central Asian partners to find solutions to the issue of creating nuclear-weapons-free zone zones.

Through its resolution, the UN General Assembly designated August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
