Baku expects Armenia to amend Constitution

PanARMENIAN.Net - Elchin Amirbekov, special representative of the President of Azerbaijan, stated that the joint declaration signed in Washington by the United States, Azerbaijan, and Armenia reaffirms Baku’s commitment to a peaceful policy.

According to Amirbekov, the clause in the document regarding the initialing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia implies the need for further steps toward its final signing and ratification, Minval.az reports.

He added that Baku expects Armenia to amend its Constitution to remove what he described as “territorial claims against Azerbaijan.” Amirbekov made this remark in an interview with NE Global.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of the declaration’s provision on opening transport and communication routes between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including “ensuring unhindered connectivity” between Azerbaijan’s mainland and Nakhichevan.

On August 8, at the White House, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration on the results of their meeting in Washington. During the same event, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States, initialed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
