European Parliament discusses Armenians held in Baku

PanARMENIAN.Net - The event, titled “Armenian Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan and the Imperative of EU Engagement,” is taking place at the European Parliament, the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) said.

The conference was jointly organized by Members of the European Parliament Costas Mavrides of the Socialists and Democrats group from Cyprus, Miriam Lexmann of the European People’s Party from Slovakia, and the EAFJD.

Its purpose is to provide an updated assessment of the situation of Armenian hostages in Azerbaijan. Participants will also address concerns over politically motivated prosecutions, arbitrary detention and severe sentences, as well as their implications for Europe’s human rights policy and EU-Azerbaijan relations, Factor.am reports.

Armen Ishkhanyan, son of Artsakh National Assembly President Davit Ishkhanyan, who has been illegally convicted in Baku on fabricated charges, is also attending the conference.

It was previously reported that Armenian prisoner of war Ludwig Mkrtchyan, held in a Baku prison, is fighting for his life. His lawyer, Luciana Minassian, disclosed the information.

“His heart is affected: left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic dysfunction and aortic insufficiency. He also suffers from recurring headaches, dizziness, chest pain and high blood pressure. All this is concealed behind the official conclusion that his ‘condition is stable.’ No real treatment,” Minassian wrote.
