Proportional electoral system may overexaggerate parties' role - MP

PanARMENIAN.Net - A member of ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is concerned that a full shift to proportional electoral system may blow the role of political parties in the society out of proportion.

At news conference in Yerevan, Artak Davtyan noted lack of awareness about the problems of electorate in Armenian regions as a major issue that might occur in case of a shift.

“With both positive and negative sides to either proportional or majority electoral systems, the issue must be resolved through a referendum,” the MP noted.

Armenian National Assembly includes 131 parliamentarians, with 41 MPs elected through majority system; 90 MPs - through proportional system.

On December 27, Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun opposition parties issued a joint statement urging for a full shift to proportional electoral system.
