Benefactor Edgar Hagopian’s life to be celebrated in Michigan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Detroit Chamber Winds Strings will celebrate the life of outstanding benefactor Edgar Hagopian at its next Nightnotes concert on Feb. 3, at Hagopian World of Rugs in Birmingham, Michigan, according to hometownlife.com.

Edgar Hagopian, businessman, philanthropist and political activist passed away in March 2011 after a long battle with cancer. He was 80 years old.

Hagopian was born in Detroit in 1930, where he grew up and began working in his father’s laboratory while a teen. He attended Cass Tech High School in Detroit, a fact that he was extremely proud of, often commenting on the excellence of the curriculum. After graduating in 1948 he attended the University of Michigan majoring in chemistry until being drafted into the army during the Korean War.

Upon returning to the family business he became instrumental in creating a Michigan business success story. Under his leadership Hagopian World of Rugs and Cleaning Services quadrupled in size and currently employs over 150 people. His name has long been associated with carpet cleaning and fine Oriental Rugs. His company’s famous purple cleaning trucks can be seen throughout metro Detroit. Hagopian celebrated 72 years in business since opening in 1939.

Mr. Hagopian always practiced an “open door” policy with his employees and was affectionately known company-wide as “Mr. H”.
