Hyundai Motor says earnings reached a record high in 2011

Hyundai Motor Co. says its 2011 earnings reached a record high on increased demand at home and abroad.

The company said Thursday, Jan 26, that itsnet profitreached 8.1 trillion won ($7.2 billion) last year. The company had earned 6 trillion won a year earlier.

Company officialssaid in atelephone conferencethat sales increased in countries such as the United States and China as well as at home, The Associated Press reported.

Hyundai Motoris South Korea's largest automaker and is a major force in the global auto industry.
