Armenian Defense Minister says NKR-Azeri contact line under controlAugust 13, 2015 - 16:27 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The situation at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the contact line with Nagorno Karabakh is under control, despite Azerbaijan’s attempts to create tension, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said, according to Panorama.am. Briefing on the situation at the government’s session Thursday, Aug 13, Ohanyan said the Armenian armed forces maintained ceasefire during the European Games, and moreover, showed restraint. “Our neighbors are trying to earn political or economic dividends. They violate ceasefire, using assault rifles and grenade launchers. Azerbaijan even launched border penetration attempts in recent days, which we successfully prevented,” Ohanyan said. The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
