Heritage party: it’s not late yet to recognize Sumgait massacre of Armenians as genocideFebruary 24, 2011 - 15:06 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - It’s not late yet to recognize the Sumgait massacre of Armenians as genocide, according to Heritage party secretary. “The authorities should take up the issue, which can become a part of Armenia’s state policy,” Larisa Alaverdyan told journalists in Yerevan. “The Sumgait case is the only one which contains testimony of Azerbaijanis, what is an advantage,” she noted Alaverdyan emphasized that Armenians never constituted a national minority in Sumgait, the town they had built. Witnesses of the pogroms, who lost their relatives in those tragic days, were also present at the news conference. “Azerbaijanis were shouting that all Armenians must be killed,” Raya Tovmasyan recollected. “My husband was fighting with the Azerbaijani assaulters and was killed in the end.” Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution.
