Armen Ashotyan: Armenian applicants’ entrance to higher education institutions should proceed smoothly

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan said that it is necessary to take steps to secure smooth transfer from schools to higher education institutions.

The Minister estimated positively the application of a new mechanism for organization of entrance exams – distribution of powers between the Ministry of Education and Science and RA Center of Evaluation and Testing (CET). “The distribution of powers of the Ministry and CET has contributed to improvement of exams level and has not paralyzed the Ministry’s activity,” Armen Ashotyan told journalists in Yerevan.

The Minister reiterated that he numerously called on parents of applicants to remain calm, as the number of seats allocated to higher education institutions is higher as compared with 2009. “We tried to secure applicants’ right to higher education, appropriating the maximum number of seats this year. As a result of it, the number of allocated seats exceeded the number of applicants. We aimed to ease the tenseness around entrance exams and decrease corruption risks,” the Minister said.

He noted that the number of those who entered higher education institutions in 2010 decreased by 2000 people as compared with last year, totaling around 11,500 applicants.
