France and Germany Going to Take Tougher Stand on Turkey

PanARMENIAN.Net - German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that terms for Turkey's accession to the European Union should be strict. She not only supports the decision to partially suspend talks with Turkey but also stands for complicating the negotiation terms. According to her, the so-called "re-consideration article" can be applied to Turkey. As reported by DPA, even if Ankara opens seaports and airports for Cyprus it will not lead to automatic resumption of talks and the consent of all 27 member states, including Bulgaria and Romania, will be needed for it. Today Angela Merkel will meet with the French and Polish Presidents, who are likely to support the offer of the German Chancellor. Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi during a meeting with his Greek counterpart said that 'with partially suspending the talks the EU should leave the door open for Turkey.' The main supporters of Turkey's bid to the EU are the UK and Scandinavian states, reports RFE/RL.
