Today NKR marks 15th anniversary of opening Lachin corridor

PanARMENIAN.Net - A number of cultural and sport events will be held on May 18 in Berdzor - the administrative center of Kashatagh (Lachin) district of Nagorno Karabakh, dedicated to the 15th anniversary of opening the Lachin corridor. Representatives of authorities and society of the republic and the district will participate in events, IA Regnum reports. In the on-going blockade conditions the Lachin corridor is the only way that connects Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia and via it - the outside world.



The military operation targeted at opening the Lachin corridor was held May 17-18, 1992. According to military sources, after cutting the way of enemy in the southwestern neighborhoods of Stepanakert and after liberating Shoushi NKR Defense Army troops launched an operation aimed at opening the Shoushi-Lachin-Zabukh road, which has military-operational and vital importance for Nagorno Karabakh. The 2nd, 5th, 6th companies of the NKR Defense Army, as well as volunteer detachments from Aygestan, Khnatsakh, Dagrav, Aknaghbyur, Avetaranots, Sarinshen, Karintak, Shosha, and Berdadzor district and from Armenia participated in the operation. On May 17 NKR Defense Army forces took under their control Tsakhkadzor, Kanach tala, Metsshen, Inshen, Yeghtsaog villigaes of Berdadzor district. On May 18 Karabakh army troops entered Lachin and then reached the state border of Armenia thus opening the "Humanitarian corridor" that connects Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia.
