Armenian officers and physicians to depart for Afghanistan with peacekeeping mission

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian officers and physicians will depart for Afghanistan with a peacekeeping mission, head of International Cooperation and Defense Programs Department of the Armenian Defense Ministry major general Mikael Melkonyan stated to a press conference in Yerevan.



He said currently talks are on the way with Greek and British sides. "The matter is about sending one or two staff officers and physicians. And since it is a new area of military actions for us, our assistance will be humanitarian. The main thing here is agreement with partners and provision of documentation," Melkonyan said.



Mikael Melkonyan reminded, according to the RA Constitution the issue of sending peacekeepers demands to sign a corresponding agreement, a special procedure in the Constitutional Court and approval by the parliament.



Armenian peacekeepers serve in Kosovo within the Greek battalion from February 12, 2004 and Iraq within the Polish contingent from January 25, 2005.
