NATO calls on the whole world to unite in fight against terrorismJuly 12, 2007 - 17:52 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - "Till September 11, 2001 terrorism was a purely abstract problem. Only after the destruction of World Trade Center twin towers in New York we realized the importance of the fight against terror," head of NATO's Defense Planning and Operations Division George Katsirdakis stated to the international conference titled "Providing Training for Fight against International Terrorism" currently being held in the Armenian capital. He said, beginning from 2001 a special committee on information and military intelligence exchange works within NATO. "However, today terrorists are using democratic freedoms and modern technologies. It is possible that they can get access to weapons of mass destruction. Cyber-terrorism has also appeared. That's why we need to unite in the fight against this evil, there is no other way here. The answer of the world community to the terrorism must be frequent and in all directions. If terrorists are acting in the whole world, we must do the same," the representative of the Alliance underlined. George Katsirdakis also stressed, according to the Article 5 of the NATO Regulations on self-defense, "Active endeavor" operations are on the way. He also reminded operations against "Al-Qaeda" in Afghanistan. "NATO closely cooperates with international organizations in this issue, however, I must notice that international terrorism will be present in our life still for a log time," Katsirdakis said.
