Stars of Armenian show business expected Sona Shahgeldyan’s to cause furore

Almost all representatives of Armenia were notable for their powerful vocal at New Wave contest in different years, but all of them lacked just a little to win it.

An Armenian singer won New Wave song contest for the first time in nine years of its existence. Armenia was represented by Sona Shahgeldyan this year, as she passed through a selection round in April 2010. People had been talking about wonderful vocal of Sona and her unusual timbre for a long time. However, almost all representatives of Armenia were notable for their powerful vocal at the contest. Jury was traditionally delighted with Armenian artists, but each time they lacked several or even one point to win the contest. This refers also to Razmik Amyan, who participated in the contest in 2006, when everyone was speaking with admiration about the singer’s unique voice, but a representative of the U.S. won the contest. Almost the same thing happened to Mher, who participated in New Wave in 2008. He received the People’s Choice Award, but has not won the contest.

PanARMENIAN.Net - However, Sona Shahgeldyan created a furor the last competition day of New Wave, gaining the highest score of judges (all judges gave 11 points to her). Thus, she won 2010 New Wave contest, gaining 288 points, the cherished statuette and 50,000 Euros as a gift.

After the victory of Sona Shahgeldyan, this theme was heatedly discussed by Armenian singers. Specifically, singer Liana considers Sona’s exceptional diligence to be among guarantees of her victory. “I think it is no secret that Sona Shahgeldyan is an extremely talented singer. Her performance in Jurmala was the best among all participants. I believe that it is a result of huge efforts made by Sona that were adequately assessed,” said Liana. Besides, the strict jury appreciated Korust te gandz (Loss or Treasure) rhythmic and lively song, which organizers of the contest were steadily calling Horust te gandz, causing various comments.

This year, similarly to previous contest years, New Wave scene hosted world-known artists, with American and French singers Toni Braxton and Lara Fabian among them.

During Lara Fabian’s performance, Armenian fans were offered a surprise. The song written especially for the French artist by contest co-founder, composer Igor Krutoi, was accompanied by famous duduk performer, Jivan Gasparian and his grandson Jivan Gasparian junior.

As for Sona Shahgeldyan’s future plans, the first thing the singer intends to do is donate part of her prize money to assist stray animals.
