Politics:

GEORGIAN TEMPERAMENT PLUS ARMENIAN NIMBLENESS

Armenian origins of two most popular politicians in Georgia disturb not only Tbilisi chauvinists, but also Baku propagandists.

June 25, 2002
Process of forming local self-government bodies of Georgia is approaching the end. The May municipal elections were marked by a quite strange feature – accusations of having Armenian background became the tool of struggle against the leaders of the pre-electoral campaign. As it was expected, two radical opposition forces – «Popular movement – Democratic front», led by the ex-minister of justice Mikhail Sahakashvili, and the team of parliament ex-speaker Zurab Zhvania taking part in the elections under the banner of conservative party, succeeded in the elections. These two politicians are united not only by aversion to Eduard Shevardnadze's personality, but also their origin – if we believe the Tbilisi media, they both have Armenian origins.
