The most unenviable part in the negotiations on Karabakh is that of the OSCE Minsk Group

Neither Obama nor Sarkozy organize a Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting, which means that first fiddle in the conflict is played by Russia, as expected from the very beginning.

Another stock meeting between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan ended like the previous five. That is it came to nothing. It can be assumed that each of the presidents got his share of reproach from Dmitry Medvedev: Ilham Aliyev for his constant, but empty threats, Serzh Sargsyan for his intractability. And so they parted, coming to an agreement “to continue negotiations based on the Madrid Principles”.

PanARMENIAN.Net - By the way, for 3 years no one has bothered to explain what, in fact, these principles include. If in addition to general provisions, such as the return of refugees and other suchlike impossible things, there is no item on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, then the process is of absolutely no use to anyone and it is doomed to failure. In fact, it has already failed, and it happened back in 2001 at the meeting of Robert Kocharyan and Heydar Aliyev in Key West. The Azeri President almost agreed to the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, but at the 11th hour did not sign the document after all. Most likely, he feared for his son’s future. Of course, this fact is never mentioned in today’s Azerbaijan; the national leader could never do such a thing, these are all “Armenian tales”. But if Heydar Aliyev was able to lose the war, he could also easily sign an instrument of surrender. However, turning everything upside down, Baku today writes that Armenia must… and there follows a long list of what Yerevan must do to “win” the favour of Azerbaijan, Turkey, and goodness knows whose else.

The most unenviable part in these negotiations is, of course, that of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is accused of all deadly sins. Meanwhile, it is especially the diplomats that are not to blame for anything; they are doing their duty - organizing meetings, visiting the region to prevent an outbreak of hostilities. But it can be said that Aliyev Jr. has already missed the moment when he could theoretically launch a war. And the guilt for this is borne by British Petroleum, as well as by the unwise policy of Turkey, which in its urge towards regional dominance did not accurately calculate forces. Erdogan was let down like the leadership and people of the post-Soviet territory: they want everything right away, forgetting about the basic rules of constructing a state and its might. By the way, Russia is trying to take the same path, too. In general, it must be kept in mind that imperial mentality is a very dangerous and insidious thing, and it does not fade away in 100-200 years. Collapse is always bloody and painful, like accumulation of lands afresh, whose population, once having the taste of freedom from the Big Brother, will not go back. In this particular case we deal with attempts to revive the Ottoman and Russian empires, which may lead to the collapse of the entire Eurasian territory. And the issue of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is exactly the touchstone where everything may break down. Let no one be surprised at the liveliness of the Russian President in arranging just another, absolutely unnecessary Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting. They will never come to any agreement, no matter what the U.S., EU, and Russian presidents may say. Too much blood has been shed and too much time has passed since proclamation of independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic to accept anything different from the status of Karabakh’s independence.

It stands to reason that this meeting, as well as the subsequent ones which are inevitable, will be called to calm down the people of both countries, despite the fact that the estimates of the meetings in Armenia and Azerbaijan are so far from the reality that they boggle the mind. Sometimes it seems that they are made on the principle “I have heard it in the market that…” Totally implausible “details” with reference to various informed sources are put into circulation. And it goes on, with serious people commenting on the negotiations and for some reason comparing Armenia with Kyrgyzstan... However, there is another interesting fact: neither Obama nor Sarkozy organize a Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting, which means that first fiddle in the conflict is played by Russia, as expected from the very beginning.
