Armenia to develop bio-fertilizers market

PanARMENIAN.Net - During the October 21 sitting, the Armenian government approved the development of bio-fertilizers market.

Armenian Minister of Agriculture Gerasim Alaverdyan told a briefing that currently Armenia imports around 25-30,000t of nitrogen fertilizers (niter) basically from Iran and Russia. To improve organic harvest in the country, bio-fertilizers were used on 30ha, while their application has improved the harvest by 30%. “We decided to facilitate their usage in farms. Besides, the usage of bio-fertilizers will help to reduce pesticides content in fruits and export agricultural product to foreign markets, securing their compliance with the European norms,” he said.

Minister Alaverdyan noted that prices for bio-fertilizers do not considerably exceed those for nitrogen fertilizers, but their efficiency is much higher by quality. Bio-fertilizers will be introduced in Armenia’s regions, while local private enterprises will deal with their production.

During the sitting, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan instructed the Minister of Agriculture to discuss the usage of bio-fertilizers with representatives of the Global Ecological Fund, which will allocate USD 3mln to Armenia for resolution of land degradation problems within next three years.
