Azerbaijan’s attempts to remove Nagorno Karabakh from Georgian phone directory failed

PanARMENIAN.Net - The telephone directory of Georgian Communications Company SILKNET mentions the area code of Nagorno Karabakh as +374 47 9. In response to protests from Azerbaijan, SILKNET asked Baku for a correct area code of NKR, reported Business Georgia.

“The usage of the above-mentioned code is conditioned by contracts with phone operators and the list of international telephone codes. We hope that the relevant government agencies of Azerbaijan will provide the correct code for calling Nagorno Karabakh,” SILKNET said.

Karabakh Telecom has been providing communications services in Nagorno Karabakh since 2002. The area code of Armenia and Karabakh coincide (+374).

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan invented its own names and codes for towns in Nagorno Karabakh. Thus, Stepankert is mentioned as Khankendi with code 162 within Azerbaijani international prefix 994.

Actually, those willing to phone Karabakh should use the Armenian code as the only operating one.
