PanARMENIAN.Net - Washington is far from launching a military campaign towards the Caucasus, writes
Director of Russian and Asian Programs of the Center for Defense Information in Washington Nikolay Zlobin in his article called "The Caucasian Dilemma of Washington". According to him, there is still hope that Moscow will refrain from the role of monopolist and will try to peacefully resolve the problems available in the region. "Besides, one should keep in mind that Americans' conception of Caucasus is rather primitive. Some US politicians, for instance, are lobbying the opinion that Armenia is not a Transcaucasian state and needs a special approach", Zlobin writes. In his words, Americans know that a campaign towards the Caucasus under present conditions would mean worsening the situation. The US was taught a lesson in Iraq as many of the mistakes were conditioned by the unawareness how to work in that country. In the Caucasus the US would prefer to cooperate with Russia, however different scenarios are not ruled out. As the situation aggravates the US will increase pressure upon Moscow in order to internationalize the peacekeeping efforts. The matter first of all concerns the sending of CIS and European peacekeepers to the zone of the Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian conflicts. "Involvement of US military is not ruled out either. It is inevitable if a military conflict bursts out in the Caucasus and Russia will not be able to settle it or if the region becomes an uncontrolled zone, thus jeopardizing the security of the European and their interests", the article notes.
