Disney’s “Jungle Book” dominates foreign box office with $96 million

PanARMENIAN.Net - “The Jungle Book” dominated the global box office, racking up $96 million this weekend and pushing the Disney film’s worldwide haul to $528.5 million, Variety reports.

The live-action version of the Rudyard Kipling stories played particularly well in China, where it has earned $97 million, and in India, where it has become the highest-grossing Hollywood release with $28.8 million. India tends to be dominated by Bollywood releases, so it’s rare for Western films to do big business in the country.

Universal’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is trying to bolster its revenues overseas after falling flat in its domestic debut. The fantasy adventure started playing in select foreign territories earlier this month. It added 37 additional territories to its footprint, including China where it opened to $11.1 million. The $115 million film is a prequel to 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman.” It earned $32.1 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its global total to $100.3 million, and nabbing second place on the foreign box office charts.

Disney’s “Zootopia” nabbed third place with $10.8 million after opening in its final foreign territory, Japan. The animated hit has racked up $907.1 million, making it the third-highest grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release, behind only “The Lion King” and “Frozen.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Crew” rounded out the top five, earning $8.1 million and $5 million, respectively. The superhero match-up has grossed $851.6 million worldwide.
