Armenian Ombudsman visits POWs after their return from AzerbaijanJanuary 29, 2021 - 11:13 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan on Thursday, January 28 visited the five Armenian prisoners of war who returned home from Azerbaijan and are receiving treatment in hospital. "At the moment, together with the head of our office's human rights department in the Armed Forces and a doctor, we are in the hospital to learn more about the state of health of the five prisoners of war who returned to Armenia from Azerbaijan today," Tatoyan wrote on Facebook Thursday. The five Armenian POWs returned to Armenia Thursday, through mediation efforts by Russia. Armenian, meanwhile, returned one Azerbaijani captive. Azerbaijan has been delaying the return of Armenian captives and POWs, with official Baku threatening to prosecute those still in captivity. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said in one of his speeches that the remaining detained persons are not prisoners of war but “terrorists”. Human rights lawyer Siranush Sahakyan has said, meanwhile, that more than 100 Armenian prisoners of war are being held in Azerbaijan. Sahakyan represents the rights of some of the Karabakh POWs before the European Court of Human Rights. The lawyer said there is enough evidence proving the capture of said persons, which the Armenian side will submit to international agencies and courts.
