Photo of Armenian Genocide orphans used for Turkish propagandaFebruary 18, 2021 - 19:06 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Istanbul's Bahçeşehir University (BAU) has used an image depicting Armenian orphans in the aftermath of the Genocide of 1915-1923 for Turkish propaganda. In a Twitter thread posted on February 17, BAU published dubious information about the Greek War of Independence of 1821-1830, accusing the Greeks of alleged crimes and destruction and posting pictures depicting other events as evidence. One such photo shows children waiting in the snow for admission into the "Orphan City", a daily spectacle from the early morning until late at night, which was published in the book "Story of Near East Relief" by James L. Barton, in 1930, in New York. Another photo, the publication claims, depicts a scene allegedly showing the siege of Tripoli in 1821, despite the fact that the world's oldest surviving photograph dates back to 1826. A third photo shows the deportation of Crimean Tatars from the Crimean Peninsula by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1944․ Besides, it was only decades after the Greek War of Independence that the Ottomans got their first railroad.
Although multiple social media users have pointed to the inaccurate use of photos in the post, the university has not deleted the thread as of February 18 evening.
