Armenia ex-President explains his 2018 resignation

PanARMENIAN.Net - Former President Serzh Sargsyan has spoken about the reasons behind his decision to step down in the spring of 2018 during the 17th congress of Republican Party of Armenia.

Sargsyan said he left wishing peace and harmony to the country, so that the nation, that had been "deceived and manipulated by populists and external stakeholders who brought them to power for clear geopolitical purposes", can calm down.

"[I left] so that no blood is shed inside the country, while the thousands of enthusiastic people gathered in the square could build the country of their dreams, demanding accountability from those who came to power," Sargsyan added.

He said he would be happy if peace and harmony were established in the country, but none of those things remained in the past three and a half days.

Sargsyan resigned on April 23, 2018, weeks after a nationwide campaign led by now Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to oust former authorities paralyzed the country with massive rallies and demonstrations, walk-outs and strikes.
