Istanbul Armenians remember intellectuals killed in Genocide

PanARMENIAN.Net - Dozens gathered in the Armenian-populated Kurtulus district of Istanbul, which was called Tatavla during the Armenian Genocide, to pay a tribute to the memory of Armenian intellectuals killed during the Genocide.

Editor-in-chief of Agos newspaper Hrant Dink and Turkish soldier of Armenian descent Sevag Balıkçı, who were both murdered because of their nationality, were honored too.

Turkish lawmaker of Armenian descent Garo Paylan, who submitted a bill to the country's parliament for the recognition of the Genocide, participated in the initiative, which urged Turkish authorities

"We do not want these lands to see Talaat, Enver, Jemal Pasha, Behaeddin Shakir anymore," people behind the initiative said, according to Ermenihaber.am.

On April 24, 1915, a large group of Armenian intellectuals was rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. On April 24, 2022, Armenians worldwide are commemorating the 107th anniversary of the Genocide which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.
