Russia: CSTO elections must be protected from outside interference

PanARMENIAN.Net - Parliamentarians of the CSTO member countries need to speak from a unified position in the international arena, Chairman of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin told a meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan on Monday, June 6.

Volodin maintained that the pressure from Washington and Brussels will only increase. he added that it was important to continue improving the legislation to protect democratic elections and develop the peacekeeping potential of the CSTO member states.

Over the entire period of the CSTO PA's work, 72 laws and recommendations have been adopted, the speaker recalled. They concerned the provision of humanitarian assistance, countering terrorism and extremism, and ensured military-technical cooperation between the CSTO states.

“Illegal sanctions, foreign interference in internal affairs, especially during elections and referendums, are challenges that all CSTO member countries have already faced,” the politician said.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization is an intergovernmental military alliance in Eurasia, consisting of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
