Diplomat says U.S. committed to Minsk Group format

PanARMENIAN.Net - Former U.S. co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick has said that Washington and Paris remain committed to the Minsk Group format, aimed at reaching a lasting peace in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Warlick's remarks came Thursday, July 7, amid declarations from Russia and Azerbaijan about the exhaustion of the OSCE Minsk Group format. According to him, Moscow and Baku no longer want to maintain the format but do not propose any alternative either.

The diplomat noted that the United States has clearly indicated that its government remains committed to the Minsk Group process. He added that Washington went further by appointing a new co-chair specializing in the Caucasus and the region.

Laura Hochla, Director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs and Regional Conflicts, serves as the current OSCE Minsk Group U.S. Co-Chair.

United States ex-Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Kauzlarich agreed that the appointment of a new co-chair testifies to Washington's commitment to the format.

Kauzlarich added, however, that given Azerbaijan's negative stance on the Minsk Group, it's difficult to imagine peace talks returning to the format.
