Armenian, Belarusian scientists working to obtain biohydrogen from green algae

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian scientists, together with colleagues from Belarus, are planning to obtain biohydrogen from green algae, MIR 24 reports.

Test tubes with a green liquid in the laboratory of Yerevan State University are called "the womb of the energy of the future." The algae used in the studies are Armenian and Belarusian. Scientists create stressful situations for microorganisms, and then they study them when algae are able to release the largest amount of biohydrogen.

“This is a renewable energy resource that should replace oil, gas and to a large extent even electricity, which are not sustainable. In the case of biofuels, this means sustainable development, this means that we can make up for this with the resources that exist in nature, and we can cultivate, for example, algae, and algae will produce hydrogen,” said Doctor of Biological Sciences, head of the Belarusian scientific group Vadim Demidchik.

The topic of biohydrogen synthesis from algae has not yet been fully studied by scientists. But this is known to be the cheapest method of obtaining alternative fuel.

“The process of generating hydrogen uses sunlight. They grow in the light and convert light energy into hydrogen,” explained Lilit Gabrielyan, associate professor, candidate of biological sciences, head of the Armenian scientific group.
