Azerbaijan announces detention of another Karabakh civilian

PanARMENIAN.Net - The State Security Service of Azerbaijan on Thursday, November 2 announced the arrest of another man from Nagorno-Karabakh identified as Madat Babayan.

According to Azerbaijani media reports, the man was detained in the Karvachar district as part of Baku’s “anti-terrorist measures” back in September.

He is accused of participation in the so-called “Khojaly genocide” in 1992.

Earlier, another Karabakh civilian identified as Vagif Khachatryan was abducted by the Azerbaijani military when trying to reach Armenia through the mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

On September 19, Azerbaijan launched a military offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh, which left hundreds of Armenians killed and thousands of others displaced. On September 20, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh agreed to a ceasefire on Azerbaijan’s terms, including the dissolution of the Defense Army. On September 18, President of the Republic of Artsakh Samvel Shahramanyan signed a decree, according to which the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) will cease to exist by January 1, 2024. Over 100,000 displaced residents have already fled Nagorno-Karabakh and reached Armenia.
