Armenia has the right to apply for membership, says EU

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia has the right to apply to join the European Union, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano has said, according to Izvestia.

“Countries have the right to strive for a better future for their people. They are free to decide how to ensure such a future,” Stano said in response to a question about whether the doors of the European Union are open to Armenia.

“When it comes to EU membership, each European country - its people and government - must decide whether they want to apply to join the EU.”

The EU official said that as soon as a country submits an application to join the European Union, it is reviewed by the member states and then they make an appropriate decision “based on EU treaties and established criteria.”

On March 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for consideration of the possibility of granting Armenia candidate status for membership of the bloc.
